ANNA MAY WONG ~ FROSTED YELLOW WILLOWS and Other Updates

We have been very busy and haven't been able to post onto our Blog for a while.  What have we been doing?

We have been doing extensive research on Miss Anna May Wong, James Wong Howe, and other Asians involved with early film.  So far, the  2013 acquisition of rare photographs, magazines ( late-1910s -1970s), newspaper articles and other related period documents would put smiles on our Asian Pioneers in cinema.  We have been fortunate enough to obtain materials predominately during the silent film period which is also our main focus.  Our AMW~FYW II Team have been working very diligently in translating and identifying much of the addition to the Collection.

Our thanks to the many supporters of our endeavor since we started our initial project in 1997.  Since then, the interest and appreciation of Asians and Asian Americans in early cinematic history has grown immensely.  Their contributions as well as they themselves are slowly being recognized.

San Francisco Silent Film Festival 2012 - July 12th - 15th

Little Toys - (XIAO WANYI) China, 1933. Directed by Sun Yu. Cast: Ruan Lingyu, Li Lili -- The blend of romance and social commentary was a trademark of director Sun Yu’s work and he is considered one of the greatest filmmakers in Chinese history. Little Toys was voted one of the hundred best Chinese films by the Hong Kong Film Awards in 2005 and its beautiful star Ruan Lingyu is one of the great icons of Chinese cinema. Anna May Wong's Personal Collection

A few of you may know that Miss Anna May Wong (1905-1961) had donated her personal collection (letters, photos, and other precious mementos which she had been collecting throughout her career) to a major public library (not in California). I believe this happened between 1955-1958. I was fortunate enough to see a few remaining items that existed during the late 1990's. Sadly, much of the collection was not properly stored or preserved.

During the 14 years that I have been researching Miss Wong, I have gathered 1,500+ photographs and postcards; over 450 magazines (published between the 1910's-1960); rare film footage; rare radio performances; personal correspondences; original film lobby cards and posters; personal items and the many precious and invaluable interviews that I have been able to record. I also have been trying to piece her life not only by year but by month and if possible by day to day. Hopefully, this will be preserved and be accessible for future generations.

My dedication to research and properly document Anna is because that is my personal definition of a true documentarian. I am a gather of facts and documentation to verify and justify "her" truth. The historical and academic importance of this Chinese woman born in America during a time that few of us really know about is what is relevant. Much of my findings has saddened me and even suprised me as you will later find out.

Anna May Wong in "Java Head" and "Tiger Bay"

ATTENTION: for you Anna May Wong Film-lovers!!

Optimum Releasing (UK) had approached "AMW~FYW" to be part of an Anna May Wong box-set with restored versions of two 1934 British films "Java Head" (with John Loder, Elizabeth Allan and Mr. Edmund Gwenn) and "Tiger Bay" (Henry Victor, Margaret Yarde). Both are talking films. "Tiger Bay" is the lesser know film but again Miss Wong has more screen presence and we get to see her portraying a strong and determined woman.
We were told that the two film set will only be available in the U.K. and Ireland June/July 2011. –

Stay tuned for further up-dates on this.
