I was fortunate enough to see Kevin Brownlow's magnificent 5 1/2 hours restored version of Abel Gance's epic silent film NAPOLEON (1927) at the Paramount Theater with composer Carl Davis' fabulous score in Oakland, California after my presentations at San Jose State University. The San Francisco Silent Fim Society really knows how to put together a great event. Bravo! to everyone involved in this historical undertaking.

Anna May Wong Hollywood Tribute announcement...

Anna May Wong (1905-1961) admirers - a wonderful Hollywood tribute announcement coming soon !!

James Wong Howe (1899-1976) admirers - great surprises are popping up :))

Terrific turnout for both academic screenings at San Jose State University. 70+ and 80+ students. Was not surprised when none of the students knew who Anna May Wong nor whom James Wong Howe was before the screenings.

When I asked who was the first ASIAN in early Hollywood cinema, only one student response was: BRUCE LEE. :(

Now, it's back to digging-up and doing more research !!

Anna May Wong (1905-1961)

We hope that everyone had a chance to "celebrate" what would of been Anna May Wong's 107th birthday.
Her strong pioneering spirit, not only as an actress, but as a Chinese American woman, when the laws and society were such that they did not allow her to ever expect to be otherwise. Anna and other woman of color like her have opened so many doors and have by example, showed us that life can be more than what we or society says or allows. We lost Anna way too early but within her short life she has left an indelible mark. As we continue to know more about her lesser know accomplishments, we get to get a glimpse of a person who was passionate, kind, and well loved by her many admirers then and even now.

The winner of the "Anna May Wong ~ Frosted Yellow Willows" T-Shirt is ROSS BERKAL from Lynnwood, MA.

We want to thank him and the overwhelming number of individuals, academic and archival institutions that have supported our efforts in introducing and our continuing efforts in documenting ANNA MAY WONG (1905-1961). Her recognition was long over due.

Anna May Wong's Personal Collection

A few of you may know that Miss Anna May Wong (1905-1961) had donated her personal collection (letters, photos, and other precious mementos which she had been collecting throughout her career) to a major public library (not in California). I believe this happened between 1955-1958. I was fortunate enough to see a few remaining items that existed during the late 1990's. Sadly, much of the collection was not properly stored or preserved.

During the 14 years that I have been researching Miss Wong, I have gathered 1,500+ photographs and postcards; over 450 magazines (published between the 1910's-1960); rare film footage; rare radio performances; personal correspondences; original film lobby cards and posters; personal items and the many precious and invaluable interviews that I have been able to record. I also have been trying to piece her life not only by year but by month and if possible by day to day. Hopefully, this will be preserved and be accessible for future generations.

My dedication to research and properly document Anna is because that is my personal definition of a true documentarian. I am a gather of facts and documentation to verify and justify "her" truth. The historical and academic importance of this Chinese woman born in America during a time that few of us really know about is what is relevant. Much of my findings has saddened me and even suprised me as you will later find out.

Anna May Wong ~ Frosted Yellow Willows: The Woman and Her Journey

I want to thank all the people who sent me "Get Well" wishes after my return from England. The day after I returned, the doctor told me that I had pneumonia and I have been lying-low since. Well, now I am getting back to work and raring to go! The trip was a great success and I found soooo much Anna May Wong materials and can't wait until my return trip to England during March 2012 or before. This Chinese American woman was "amazing"! I've research her life and accomplishments for over 14 years and still find no end to the new discoveries to this pioneering-spirited woman.

This was a small promo trailer that we put together in 2005: http://www.anna-may-wong.com/promo1.htm . Enjoy.

Will post up-dates of the England trip in our next posting. Excuse me, now I have to get back to working on "ANNA MAY WONG ~ FROSTED YELLOW WILLOWS: THE WOMAN AND HER JOURNEY".

"Anna May Wong ~ Frosted Yellow Willows: The Woman and Her Journey"

The Chinese American actress, Anna May Wong (1905-1961) was the first Asian American woman to achieve Hollywood and international stardom. This second biographical documentary film provides insight into this pioneering and passionate woman. When obstacles such as The Chinese Exclusion Act (1882-1943), the Miscegenation Laws, and being a woman of color closed many doors of opportunity she found ways to open a few of them. This is the journey of Anna May Wong's life as seen through her eyes. The documentary includes her professional as well as her personal accomplishments, her family and traditional commitments and the people and places that crossed her path. Interviews with family members, childhood friends, people she worked with and men that Anna dated help to reveal a unique side to this fascinating woman. Never before seen intimate & personal photos and film footage are an added treat to her many fans and to early film historians. The film shows the personal values that she believed in and the people that she loved along the way. This is "ANNA MAY WONG ~ FROSTED YELLOW WILLOWS: THE WOMAN AND HER JOURNEY".
