Anna May Wong ~ Asian Pacific American Heritage Month

I want to bring attention to the fact that May is "Asian Pacific American Heritage Month".  Anna May Wong and the many other Asian pioneers that helped to trail-blaze and open doors of opportunity for the APA people of today should be remembered and "thanked".  Appreciate and recognized these past generations who lived through trying times in America's history.

I was fortunate enough to see Kevin Brownlow's magnificent 5 1/2 hours restored version of Abel Gance's epic silent film NAPOLEON (1927) at the Paramount Theater with composer Carl Davis' fabulous score in Oakland, California after my presentations at San Jose State University. The San Francisco Silent Fim Society really knows how to put together a great event. Bravo! to everyone involved in this historical undertaking.

I want to thank all the people who sent me "Get Well" wishes after my return from England. The day after I returned, the doctor told me that I had pneumonia and I have been lying-low since. Well, now I am getting back to work and raring to go! The trip was a great success and I found soooo much Anna May Wong materials and can't wait until my return trip to England during March 2012 or before. This Chinese American woman was "amazing"! I've research her life and accomplishments for over 14 years and still find no end to the new discoveries to this pioneering-spirited woman.

The Chinese American actress, Anna May Wong (1905-1961) was the first Asian American woman to achieve Hollywood and international stardom. This second biographical documentary film provides insight into this pioneering and passionate woman. When obstacles such as The Chinese Exclusion Act (1882-1943), the Miscegenation Laws, and being a woman of color closed many doors of opportunity she found ways to open a few of them. This is the journey of Anna May Wong's life as seen through her eyes. The documentary includes her professional as well as her personal accomplishments, her family and traditional commitments and the people and places that crossed her path. Interviews with family members, childhood friends, people she worked with and men that Anna dated help to reveal a unique side to this fascinating woman. Never before seen intimate & personal photos and film footage are an added treat to her many fans and to early film historians. The film shows the personal values that she believed in and the people that she loved along the way. This is "ANNA MAY WONG ~ FROSTED YELLOW WILLOWS: THE WOMAN AND HER JOURNEY".

"Anna May Wong ~ Frosted Yellow Willows" will be screening with "Piccadilly" at the 16th Bradford International Film Festival on Wednesday, March 24, 2010.

They called her “The Yellow Wonder”. The daughter of a Chinese laundryman Anna May Wong (1905-61) was a pioneering actress during the embryonic (and deeply racist) years of Hollywood, Despite early success in 1921’s The Toll of the Sea, Wong ricocheted around Hollywood seeking to make a break into movies. Her exotic looks ensured she was never short of work but all too often Wong was relegated to playing servant girls or sundry ethnic support – Indians, Eskimos, Polynesians – whilst white actresses were employed by the studios in key oriental roles. Leading roles were denied her until 1928 when, aged 23, she broke through as Song in the German film of the same name. Over a career spanning 40 years Wong (real name Wong Liu Tsong, or Frosted Yellow Willows) broke down barriers, becoming the first global Chinese/American star. From silents through talkies to TV and beyond, she struggled to be more than just the stereotypical dragon lady of screen villainy.
